At least 46,428 foreign tourists arrived in Nicaragua during the Holy Week despite the seisms that rocked the country in the past few days, according to the executive president of the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute (Intur), Mayra Salinas.

According to Salinas, some 53,000 tourists were originally supposed to arrive, but the week was atypical because of the intense seismic activity.

In general, Intur reported that over 1.2 million local and foreign tourists visited the country’s departments during the just concluded week, according to the website El 19 Digital.

On April 10, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocked Managua and other cities in the Pacific.

In the following days, the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter) registered several tremors and major telluric movements, mainly in municipalities close to the capital.

The government decreed extreme red alert and adviced the population to maintain precautionary measures to face any likely major catastrophe.

Two people lost their lives and some 2,500 houses were affected.

Ineter has reported a fall in the quantity and intensity of seisms, but the alert remains in place and classes are still suspended in Managua and Leon, some 90 km from the capital.
